Wireless cameras are essentially transmitters broadcasting video signals within a specified (limited) range and on a specific frequency (e.g. 2.4 GHz). A wireless camera is actually a digital camera connected to a radio tranasmitter. These devices broadcast on a certain channel. The receiver(part) has channel(s) corresponding to transmitting frequency to tune in. The picture or video is thus received by the receiver and further converted to suitable TV format such as PAL or NTSC.
Some receivers also incorporate functionality for picture/video storage. These are called DVR receivers (digital video recording receivers). Usually, the recording medium in such cases is either an SD card or USB memory stick. DVR receivers are compact devices that eliminate the need for VCR for storing pictures or video clips.
Both the cam and receiver need power. Usually, the power is supplied by mains adapters. However, it is possible to supply the wireless camera with battery power. The power demand of these gadgets is high (especially, if it is a night-vision type) and batteries drain off quickly. A few models are optimized for battery operation and incorporate Lithium batteries that can operate the camera for a few hours.

GPRS/EDGE Wireless Camera
Here is the new breed of wireless cameras, that can remotely monitor a site or asset and transmit the images using GPRS or EDGE (Enhanced Data GSM Environment) wireless communication technology. A SIM card is required to connect to your GSM service provider. Trigger events can be set for PIR sensor (motion sensor) or door contacts. Alternatively, timed (fixed intervals) imaging is possible. Images or video-clips can be sent to an FTP server or as Email via GPRS/EDGE network. Voice recording is also possible.
Camera configuration can be carried out by sending SMS messages.
Caution!
Setting up a GPRS/EDGE camera is somewhat techy, but if you can set up your home wireless internet connection, you should have no problem.
Wireless Gate Controller
One person, a whole family or even a large office can use this device. The memory space is large enough to register 500 telephone numbers!
Your mobile phone can be used as a secure remote control for garage gate control, private car-park barrier control or other applications where a simple On/Off functionality is desired. You can define "ON time" window during set up, so there is no need to issue an Off command. A list of one or more "authorised" phone numbers can be added to the controller's memory, enabling single or multiple user operation. Dialling from a mobile phone doesn't cost you as the controller doesn't answer the call.
