A few years ago, while I was busy doing my stuff at the university, a research assistant asked me to work on a project. That was then when I heard about RFID. Mr. Dembowski explained to me how a capsule-transplant inside human body had to communicate with a nearby device. It was not very clear immediately, how the capsule-transplant was powered. I expected that during the course of conversation, this issue 'll pop up, however it didn't happen. Eventually, I had to ask him, "how about the power source for the capsule? - can we afford to plant a battery inside human body?"
"No. We don't need a battery", Mr. Dembowski uttered calmly, perhaps cursing my ignorance on this matter. My eyes widened. How come? - a circuit operating without power?                                                                                                                          "Read about RFID", replied Mr. Dembowski.

As I gathered material and started learning about RFID, it got more and more exciting. My job was to develop the firmware, so I had to learn about coding methods suitable for RFID. I think, it was inexpensive PIC12C671 microcontroller that we used for the application.

All right. We better get to business. Instead of talking about it (well, you can get tons of info on the subject, just google RFID or "radio frequency identification"), I would rather like to design a simple RFID system that can serve some (hopefully, good) purpose. Usually, RFID is used for the purpose of identification of a product. For example, garments, books or CDs / DVDs have small tags attached to them. Tags are removed or deactivated on payment, but if you forget to pay for the item, the scanner at the store exit (actually a powerful reader) will be quick to announce that a theft is underway.
To set up an RFID communication system, at a very basic level, you need a tag and a reader. The aim of this project is to create both modules, develop firmware and have a working prototype, that possibly could be connected to a PC for reading from and writing to the tag. Let me define the terms tag and reader first.
The tag is the piece of hardware that has some information, such as a number, a parameter value, or a list of numbers or characters. The tags can be without power source, or battery-powered (for extended communication range). We 'll use batteryless option. Our communication range will be a few centimeters.
The reader does what it means - It reads the information content from the tag. 

Objectives:
  • develop tag
  • develop reader
  • develop firmware, both for the reader and the tag
  • test if the reader can read a stored number from the tag
  • develop a serial communication interface for PC and the reader
  • read and write tag from PC
